Granite monolith and misty sunrise. Kosciuszko National Park, NSW Australia

Granite and Kangaroo Range at Sunrise. From a distance I saw mist in the Snowy Valley and found a ridge of granite tors that offered a supurb view. After walking amidst the tors I saw a kopse with one gigantic boulder that seemed to have carved off the main rock and fallen to the ground. Deciding this was the location I proceded to climb the seven metres to gain a better view of the valley with the granite boulder isolated in the foreground, a feat easier said than done. Slipping and sliding on icy rock I made it to the top, and with careful footing it was just a matter of finding a position to setup and wait for the sun to rise. I worked out that there would only be a window of a few seconds to get the shot as low cloud was partially obscurring where the sun would rise and I needed the sun just as it peaked above the horizon. I combined two ND filters to tone down the brightness and adjusted the exposure to suit. As the Sun appeared, rays streaking the sky, the mist withdrew a little revealing more of the landscape. As it peaked above the horizon I rattled off one image, changed the orientation of the digital back and fired twice before it snuck behind cloud. I waited again for it to appear but by then it had lost its mystery. I sat and watched the play of light a while before trying the slippery descent back to tera firma.
