Illustration of an American P-38 Lightning WWII fighter aircraft. The P-38 was a single-seated, twin-piston engined aircraft designed by Lockheed Corporation for the Army Air Forces. The first P-38 flew in 1939 and more than 10,000 were built from 1941 to 1945. Reaching speeds of up to 640 kilometres per hour, the P-38 was 160 kilometres per hour than any fighter aircraft in 1940.
