He passedseveral years abroad. In 1802-5 was Lieutenant, with rank of Major ofthe Independent Corps of Cadets ; was also some years aide-de-camp,to several Governors ; was Secretary of the Board of War ; Clerk ofthe Municipal Court and from his dignified presence was often mistakenfor the Judge. In 1824 he was appointed agent of Massachusetts forclaims against the General Government growing out of the war of 1812,and passed the season in Washington. His daughters were celebratedbeauties; Frances, the eldest, a blonde, was said by Joseph Bona-parte, who met her at a ball in Boston, to be the handsomest ladyhe had ever seen in America. Major Pierce was lost at sea with hiswife while on a passage from New York to Mobile and New Children :— 2906. i. Joseph, b. May 9, 1792; d. Sept. 3, 1823. 2907. ii. Frances, b. Jan. 17, 1794; m.
