The electrode will stimulate the common peroneal nerve, causing the calf muscle to contract slightly. This movement of the muscle will help to pump blood from the lower leg, back towards the heart, and lessen the risk of a blood clot (thromobosis) forming within the vein. Blood clots are more likely to form during periods of inactivity, such as prolonged bed rest, surgery and long haul flights.
