At 50 kilometers (31 miles) distant from the port begins the plateauwith its unexplored forests of pine, Yerba Mate, and other kinds oftimber; and at 100 kilometers (62 miles) distant northwestwardly, isthe agricultural and pastoral Colony of Cerro Azul, the most famousone in the northern part of the State. The soil is extremely fertile, and is adapted to very diversified culti-vation, which is now limited, however, through lack of necessarytransportation facilities. The route between Cerro Azul and Jaguariahyva passes through large cattle ranges, but within the boundaries of Sao Paulo, the greatest part of the area is covered with pine and other varieties of timber that have not yet been exploited owing to the absence of railways.
