SARS virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus particles (virions, orange) found near the periphery of an infected cell (green). SARS is an often fatal lung disease that first appeared in China in 2002. The SARS virus is a coronavirus. Coronaviruses are named for their corona (crown) of surface proteins that are used to attach to and penetrate a host cell. Once inside a cell, the virus particles use the cell machinery to make more copies of themselves.
