The average diameter of the onions is from 5 to 7% inches—thus making the circumference from 15 to 22 inches. Single bulbs often attain weights of from 2% to 4 pounds each. The skin is a beautiful silvery white; the flesh is snowy white and of a particularly mild and pleasant flavor. So sweet and tender is the flesh that it can be eaten raw, like an apple. For several years we offered cash prizes for the largest Silver King onions grown from our seed. In 1886 Alfred Rose, Penu Yan, N. Y., won the first » prize with two onions of the enormous weight of 4% lbs. and 4 lbs. 2 ozs. In 1889 the first Jtri ' Mammoth Pompeii Onion, jg In 1887 our first prize was won by Mr. I. B. Taylor, Ellensburg, Washington, with an onion weigh- ing 4 lbs. 0 ozs., while an onion 4 lbs. 8 ozs. in weight secured the second prize for J. V. H. Young, Ar- royo Grande, California. The skin is thin and of a handsome, reddish-brown color; the flesh is pure white, fine grained, and mild.
