A smallsword with cut hilt, German or French, circa 1720 Double-edged thrusting blade of flattened hexagonal section. The upper half displays finely etched vine decoration and ground decorative lines. Minor remnants of gilding. A motto displayed on both sides of the forte, "Ne me tir pas sans raison, ne me remette point sans honeur." Double shell-guard and hilt shows vine decoration cut in relief on a stippled background.
