The incoming high-tension lines may be connecteddirectly to the transmission line; but, if frequent or con-tinued use of the portable substation in one locality isnecessary, disconnecting switches should be mounted onthe nearest pole to facilitate disconnecting the oil switchwithout having to cut off power from the transmissionline. The use of such portable stations insures continuity ofsupply with minimum investment in permanent substations, saves large investment in. copper and equipment on linesinfrequently loaded, provides additional capacity at anypoint where there may be a temporary abnormally heavytraffic, and may furnish power for extensions during theperiod of construction.
