Equilateral prism deflecting red laser beam


When light is incident from the air on an optical prism it refracts (bends) toward the normal to the surface. When light exits the prism through the second surface it refracts away from the normal to the surface. The angles of incidence and refraction are related through the Snell's law and depend on the prism's refractive index. In this photograph a Helium-Neon laser beam (633 nm) is shown to be deflected by an equilateral prism. Characteristic laser speckle pattern is apparent.
