Aspirin. Polarised light micrograph of crystals of the drug aspirin. Otherwise known as acetyl- salicylic acid (chemical formula: ). Aspirin is an analgesic drug used for the relief of moderate pain, the reduction of inflammation and of fever. Aspirin is derived from salicylic acid, the active ingredient of willow bark, which in the mid-18th century was chewed to relieve symptoms of malaria. Salicylic acid was effective in reducing fevers but was highly unpalatable, and the more palatable acetylsalicylic acid was developed. Aspirin helps prevent blood clotting and thus may play a role in reducing coronary heart disease. Magnification: x10 at 35mm size.
