Pelvimetry.—For practical purposes certain measurements of thepelvis are advisable before labor so that the obstetrician may recognizethe abnormally small pelvis in time to institute proper measures fordelivery. The instruments employed are called pelvimeters; innumer-able types are in use, but the underlying principle of the calipers isthe basis for practically all of them. The width of the pelvis is esti-mated by taking the distance between the outer surfaces of the anteriorsuperior spines of the iliac bones—the interspinous diameter—and that 30 TEXTBOOK OF OBSTETRICS FOR NURSES between tlie widest expanse of the crests of the same bone—the inter-. FiG. 19.—Pelvic outlet. (Williams.)cristal diameter. The former normally measures centimeters (10^/.,inches) and the latter centimeters (H^/g inches). The antero-posterior diameter of the inlet can be roughlygauged by taking the distance between thedepression beneath the spine of the last lumbarvertebra and the upper outer margin of thesymphysis—the external conjugate or Baude-locques diameter. Normally it measures (8V5 inches), but if it falls centimeters (Y^/g inches) there is aprobability that the conjugata vera may beshortened sufficiently to interfere with labor. The oblique diameters, between the posteriorsuperior spine of the ilium on one side and theanterior superior spine on the opposite side aresometimes measured routinely. The rightoblique diameter begins at the right posteriorsuperior spine and is usually slightly longerthan the left. The normal measurement is givenas centimeters (8V5 inches). Intertroch
