Protesters outside the Stock Exchange wear 'coal monster' masks for Global Coal Resources Management CEO Gary Lye and Chair of the Board of Directors Michael Tang and call for an end to plans for open-cast mining at Phulbari in Bangladesh and for the company to be de-listed from the Stock Exchange Alternative Investment Market. Protests in Bangladesh have prevented mining for ten years, and the event was also a vigil for the three villagers shot dead and two hundred injured at a mass protest in 2006. The mine would displace 130,000 farming families, destroy 14,600 hectares of fertile land, threaten clean water resources and have a devastating impact on one of the world’s largest mangrove forests and UNESCO heritage site, the Sunderbans.
