He was assigned to theUnited States army as second lieutenantof the Seventh infantry, and soon rose torank of the war was inevitable, CaptainCabell resigned from the United States armyand offered his services to the was at once commissioned as major by theConfederate government, and, under orders fromPresident Davis, left on the 21st for Richmond, Va., to organize the quar-termaster, commissary and ordnance departments.
