The castle as seen was constructed in front of a pele tower of the 13th. and The later building as seen in the view from the bridge over the River Wenning was built in 1849-42, for Pudsey Dawson, a financier, by Sharpe and Paley of Lancaster. More work was carried out in 1889 for the Forsters of Bradford, by Paley and Austin of Lancaster.
