Eerguson, John W. Davis, Benjamin Ball, Smalley and Joshua Babcock, and in 1857, a number of others. These pioneers located near the Brownville freight road, possibly with theexpectation that at some future time a town might be founded on the roadin their neighborhood. At an early date a town was laid out by BenjaminE. Eerguson and a warehouse was built, and this projected city was called?Eranklin in honor of its founder, but it never got above the importanceof a freight station. On the Nemaha, near MunilMjldt, several families located in 1855, amongwhom was John Rothenberger. the first settler, locating three miles east,and later came O. I.
