According to mythology King Pirithous of the Lapiths, son of Ixion, invited the centaurs to his wedding. The centaurs got drunk and started bothering the Lapith women resulting in a fierce battle erupted. The centaurs using tree trunks and slabs of stone as weapons. Eventually the Lapiths were victorious killing many centaurs and expelling them from Thessaly .
