Jar, Edo period (1615–1868), mid-19th century, Japan, Glass, H. 1 3/4 in. ( cm), Glass, The glassware known as chalcedony was developed in Renaissance Venice. Production ceased in the eighteenth century, only to be revived in the mid-nineteenth century. These examples of chalcedony glassware reveal skill and artistry equal to that of European makers, although they were produced only shortly after the technique was introduced into Japan in the mid-1800s
