I.—Kilsaran j Bronze Axe found at , 1870 Greenmount Mote, and its Contents. 19 faring marauders, than the piling up by exhaustive manuallabour of immense structures such as Greenmount, whichmust have taken considerable time to complete. The Irishmust have been very indifferent indeed to the doings of theDanes, if they allowed them day after day peacefully, to con-struct in their midst a fortress such as this :—but we knowthat in this very district the Danes met considerable op-position. Those therefore who can think that it was constructed bymen with a sword in one hand and a wheelbarrow in the other(if we may use an Irish bull) are welcome to their own sup-positions. Mr. T. J. Westropp, , , who isprobably the greatest living authority on Irish motes andmounds, believes that these forts generally existed priorto the Danish invasion ; while he sees evidence in the ex-istence of the sword plate at Greenmount and in the rings ofearth which surrounded the fort
