There is in the town a street-car line, where little cars are drawnby sorry-looking mules, but it does not seem to be patronized. Thestreets are paved in but a few places; the rest is soft white sand,trying to the eyes when the sun is shining, and making all drivingvery heavy. 40 A FLYING TEIP TO THE COFFEE SELLERS, BAKRANQUILLA. A great many small donkeys are used, and although they are notmuch larger than mastiffs, men ride them, sitting cross-legged liketailors, to prevent their feet from dragging. One man passed usperched on top of a little donkey, and with a live pig hanging oneither side, squealing at every step. There are harracks in the town, with a lot of dirty, unkempt sol-diers who are continually tooting away on their bugles. Their callfor taps is almost identical with ours. There is in the town an electric light plant and also an artificialice factory. In the Hotel Colombia I saw a large scarlet, blue, and greenmacaw and a toucan with a serrate beak {Pterorjlossiis sp.). Thisbird assumed a most curious position when asleep, turning its tailup over its back and head instead of allowing it to hang as other BABBANQUILLA. 41 birds do.
