Zaandam, Holland. The so-called Pixel Poort Bicycle Tunnel. Connecting Amsterdam and Zaandam. The Netherlands

Design: Reinder Bakker, Hester van Dijk, Maartje Dros en Eric Klarenbeek (2009). The 280m (900ft) long tunnel for cyclists connects the city of Zaandam with the ferry to Amsterdam. Through a dedicated website local residents provided the design team with small drawings, illustrating what they were most proud of in their region. The pixels were then translated into ceramic tiles, a traditional Dutch art form and strong cultural symbol. Each tile is 10x10cm (4x4") and all 16 available colors have been used. Among the subjects: Multiculturalism, Batman and Robin, traditional green wooden houses, historic industries, nature, the Zaan river and harbor, polders and lots of windmills.
