Yeltsin Served as the first President of Russia from 1991 to 1999, even though he was considered to be a liberal, he was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1961 to 1990. Yeltsin resigned in December 1999 and appointed Vladimir Putin as his successor.
