Underwater photograph by French zoologist Louis Boutan (1859-1934) of Emil Racovitza, a diver at Observatoire oceanologique de Banyuls-sur-Mer, 1899. Boutan's pioneering experiments took place at Banyuls-sur-Mer, on France's Mediterranean coast. The first underwater photograph was taken in 1856, but had involved using a pole to put a camera below the water. Boutan transformed the technique.
