Saw [John] Bonner and [Alfred] Guernsey, got lots of blocks. Found [Frank] Bellew at the Pic Office. Was about lunching with him at Delmonico ?s when a boy warned him that ?ǣhis case ? versus the watchman, was being tried; so both of us went over to the City Hall. Soon settled, Bellew has to pay the man $ He will be, however victimized for costs. This evening, as appointed, went to the Pic Office at 8. Found Bellew, [Fitz James] O ?Brien, Major Piercy, and boy there. O ?Brien ?s ?ǣMan About Town ? being transferred to the Pic, they have decided on a mild splurge in announcing it. So four thousand bills have been printed, and this night we met to superintend the posting. Bill-stickers came ? eight of ?em, boy-men, profane rowdy, vulgar roughs. Gin served out to ?em and instructions. [Charles E.] Wilbur came. Doesticks [Mortimer Thomson] didn ?t show. Out on our several beats, each having two bill stickers under his control. My beat was William, Wall, Pine and Nassau streets, Major Piercy (and one billsticker) superintending one side, myself the other. We did it very thoroughly, the fellows, inspired by the gin, sticking the bills in many unauthorized places, as on signs, bulletins &c. The Times, Tribune and Sun bulletins were placarded finely, and one bill was stuck on a horse. Back to the Office by 11 1/4, Bellew and O ?Brien not returned. Our bill stickers lay round on tables &c, I and Piercy talked. He exhibited his curiously tattooed arms, on which were portrayed an elephant and Burmese idols ? extraordinarily minutely done, too. A hearty, travelled, Irish soldier, and a gentleman (?) Out again for a little bill-sticking, when I left and went home. 19. Thursday. Down town calls. Drawing. Writing to Charley [Gunn] in the evening. 20. Friday. Drawing hard all da
