Incidentally it may be mentioned that among the studentsof Dr. Witt was a lad born of Jewish parentage, in Philadel-phia, in 1720, who in after years became famous throughoutEurope as Jacob Philadelphia, one of the most renownedphysicists and mechanicians of his day.^ There is nothing whatever to show that Christopher Sauerentered as regular student with Doctor Witt, or that he wasever granted any diploma by that erudite philosopher andstudent, in fact the evidences are against any such presump-tion, but being of an ingenious and mechanical turn of mindhe was evidently employed by the versatile docto
