A practical treatise on natural and artificial concrete; its varieties and constructive adaptations . ion of a double-acting Goodmanscrusher, into the scheme of which is introduced a togglearrangement, differing, however, from the Blake, because itis not intended to regulate the size of the produce from themachine, but to facilitate the action of the movable ormiddle jaw; the desired size of reduced material being, asin No. 12 machine, controlled by the regulating wedgesattached to the fixed jaws. The patent specification describesthis somewhat novel machine as follows:— 134 A PRACTICAL TREATISE ON CONCRETE. The extent of the motion of different parts of the block(movable jaw) is controlled by the fulcrum levers, each ofwhich abuts on one of its sides in a cavity prepared for it inthe upper end of the block, and on the other side each leverabuts in recesses formed in the two side-cheeks of the fulcrum levers allow the upper end of the block to riseand fall freely under the influence of the eccentric, but thelateral motion which they permit to the part of the block Fig. Goodmans Double-acting Stone Crusher. which is between them is but very slight; but this lateralmotion to and from the fixed crushing faces increases inpassing downwards towards the bottom of the block, and it isgreatest at the bottom, where a free escape of the materialirom the crushing cavity is required, and where the piecesof stone to be acted upon being of small size, a smallercrushing power will suffice. In place of the fulcrum levers, friction rollers or other equivalent means may be applied toguide the upper end of the block, but the arrangementshown is preferable. MACHINERY FOR REDUCINa THE AGGREGATES. 135 In this crusher it is possible to reduce materials to a finercondition than by the ordinary Blakes stone breaker. These references to machines of such well-known cha-racter are intended to illustrate the facility with whichaggregates can be reduced to a moderate degree of
