LISBON, Portugal -- Built on a small island near the banks of the Tagus River just to the southwest of downtown Lisbon, the Tower of Belem (or Torre de Belém) dates to 1514-1520. It was part of a defensive network protecting shipping to Lisbon port and beyond during Portugal's Age of Discovery. Paired with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the foreground is a replica at 1:50 scale designed to aid the visually impaired.

Belem Tower, also known as Torre de Belém, is a historic fortress located along the Tagus River in the Belem district of Lisbon, Portugal. Built in the early 16th century during the reign of King Manuel I, the tower is a prime example of Manueline architecture and is considered an important symbol of Portugal's Age of Discovery. The tower was initially constructed as a defensive structure to guard the entrance to the Tagus estuary and later served as a starting point for many maritime expeditions during Portugal's era of exploration. Belem Tower is closely associated with prominent Portuguese explorers such as Vasco da Gama, who embarked on his historic voyage to India from its shores. Today, Belem Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world to admire its unique architectural style and learn about its rich history. The interior of the tower can be explored through guided tours, and its upper levels offer panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the Tagus River and the Belem district. As a prominent symbol of Portugal's past and a testament to its maritime achievements, Belem Tower continues to captivate visitors with its impressive architecture, historical significance, and unique place in the annals of European history.
