Cleiphane (var. sphalerite) from Franklin, New Jersey. Sphalerite, also known as blende or zinc blende, has composition (Zn,Fe)S (zinc-iron sulfide). It can occur in many hues. The sample contains brown sphalerite and cleiophane, a transparent, colorless or lightly colored variety of sphalerite. Cleiophane consists of almost pure zinc sulphide, with a trace of cadmium. Cleiophane is also a fluorescent mineral. Natural sphalerites always contain some iron and as iron content increases the color becomes darker. Sphalerite is the principle ore mineral for zinc. This sample is 9 cm across.
