The fruit and vegetable market in the central square of Covent Garden, London – an old engraving c. 1840. In the 1600s a small open-air fruit, flower and vegetable market had developed on the south side of this fashionable London square. Gradually, both the market and the surrounding area fell into disrepute, as taverns, coffee-houses and brothels opened. An Act of Parliament was passed to manage the area and Charles Fowler's neo-classical covered market building was erected in 1830 to help control the market.
