Scarce a mile from the Devizes is New-Park, the seat of James Sutton, Esq. Herestands an elegant stone mansion, of theIonic order, with wings, designed by, andbuilt under the direction of Mr. JamesWyatt, to whose taste it does great house stands on elevated ground,whichgradually slopes towards the south-west,and on the north-west lies a deep valley,decorated with wood; beyond which risesRoundaway Down, forming a noble back-ground. On the south, the towers of theDevizes appear; and to the south-west,moredistant prospects are obtained. The groundsaround the house are neat, but do not aboundwith wood; and what they possess is of lategrowth. STOKE PARK. About three miles to the south of theBath road, near the village of Seend, lies. LONDON TO BATH AND BRISTOL. 89 Stoke Park, the seat of Joshua Smith, of Mr. Delme. It stands in the districtof Edingdon, and is about two miles distantfrom the village of that name. By the present proprietor, the old house,which stood in a low, damp situation, waspulled down; and an elegant new man-sion, of Grecian architecture, has beenerected on a more elevated situation, nearthe southern verge of the park, from a de-sign and under the direction of Mr. Stewart,of London. This structure, with its offices, extendsfrom east to west, three hundred and fifty-five feet. The southern front is a compo-sition of different orders of architecture, andthe entrance is by a neat Doric colonnade,between two recessed Venetian windowstwo stories high, composed of the Ionic andCorinthian orders
