Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, Bolzano, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: face of St John the Evangelist in detail from Crucifixion fresco. In the complete painting, St John stands on the right at the foot of the cross, looking up at the crucified Christ. The cathedral, known to German-speaking Roman Catholics as Dompfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt, stands on the site of an early Christian basilica. It was enlarged in Romanesque style and re-dedicated in 1180 before gaining a Gothic appearance between 1380 and 1420. The ornate 65m-high open fretwork spire, added in 1517, features gargoyles judged masterpieces of High or Flamboyant Gothic sculpture and architecture.
