1903-5 Ziegler Arctic expedition dog and sled teams travelling over snow and ice. There were two Ziegler expeditions that attempted to reach the North Pole, both sponsored by US millionaire William Ziegler. The 1901-2 expedition failed, and the next one set out in 1903, led by Anthony Fiala (1869-1950). Both attempts set out from Franz Josef Land, north of Russia. The 1903-5 expedition consisted of 39 men, and spent two years in the Arctic vainly waiting for the right conditions to attempt to reach the Pole. On their return in 1905, they learned that Ziegler had died the previous year, still waiting for news from the expedition. Photographed by Fiala in March 1905, at latitude 82 degrees North.
