Instead ofits more general position be-side the shaft of the cross, thechalice is sometimes placed atan equal distance from eitherside of the slab, and thus eitheroccupies the place of the cross-stem, or is incorporated withit. Three examples of the lat-ter arrangement I have alreadydescribed from Jervalx Abbeyand Newcastle - upon - are two other slabs ofthis same kind at Jervalx Ab-bey : one of these monuments,in addition to the cross andchalice, has the following in-scription incised upon a border-fillet:— Incised Slab, Clixby, Lincolnshire.
