SALT SEA, or DEAD —This sea is called in the Scrip-tures the sea of the plain, Deut. 4 :49 ; 2 Kgs. 14 : 25 : the salt sea,Deut. 3:17; Josh. 3:16; 12 : 3 ; theeast sea, Joel 2 : 20; Eze. 47 : 18;Zech. 14 : 8: and the sea. The ti-tle Dead Sea was not found in Jew-ish writers, but was introduced at anearly period by the Greek authors. TheArabs give it the same name, but morecommonly call it the Bahr Lut, or Lakeof Lot. Situation and Extent.—The Salt orDead Sea is situated only 16 miles fromJerusalem, in a straight line, and isplainly visible from the Mount of occupies the deepest portion of thegreat depression which extends fromthe range of Lebanon on the north tothe Gulf of Akabah on the south. Itlies between 31° 6 and 31° 46 N. lat.,and 35° 24 and 35° 37 E. long. Thesea is 46 miles long, 10J miles in itsgreatest width, and covers an area ofnearly 300 square miles
