A Standard Vanguard lies abandoned in a field on New Zealand's South Island. British in origin the cars were in productiuon from 1948-1963. Although they were British, produced by The Standard Motor Company in Coventry, some models were assembled in New Zealand. The design was modelled on American cars of the time. The engine was 2088 cc and the gearbox a 3 speed manual. Overdrive became an option in 1950. With initial production so close to the finish of WW2 it was a seller's market and the vanguard did well at home and abroad.
