West Indian Manatee Trichechus manatus latirostris Florida
Manatees are recovering from their current endangered species status. Although marine mammals, manatees are closely related to the elephant. There are about 2,500 manatees left in the wild. Legend suggest that manatees are the basis for sailors tales of mermaids.
