No scite could be much betterchosen for seclusion, nor could the inmates of any dwellingderive more comfort from the recesses of retirement thanmight be found by those who inhabited here. The abbey was founded by the lord of Alfreton, RobertFitz Ranulph, about the year 1175, for regular canons ofthe Premonstratensian order, and was dedicated to Thomasa-Becket and the Virgin Mary.
