Of seats, we tell, ** where priests, mid tapers dim,Breatbed the warm prayer, or tund the midnight hymn ;To scenes like these the fainting soul retired-^Revenge and anger in these cells expired ;By pity soothed, remorse lost half her softend pride droppd penitential tears. Beauchief Abbey stands within a few miles of Sheffield, ina very retired and highly romantic spot, beautifully diversi-fied with valley and rising ground, finely covered with wood, and replenished with water. No scite could be much betterchosen for seclusion, nor could the inmates of any dwellingderive more comfort from the recesses of retirement thanmight be found by those who inhabited here. The abbey was founded by the lord of Alfreton, RobertFitz Ranulph, about the year 1175, for regular canons ofthe Premonstratensian order, and was dedicated to Thomasa-Becket and the Virgin Mary. Of its history little or no-thing is known, the archives of the abbey being destroyed,or secret
