Goitre. Man with a large goitre, a swelling of the neck caused by the enlargement of the thyroid gland. This may result from hormonal imbalances, an iodine (mineral) deficiency, Graves' disease, or more rarely thyroid cancer. The swelling results in a difficulty breathing and swallowing. If the goitre is due to a lack of iodine in the diet (iodine is used for the production of thyroid hormones) the thyroid gland enlarges in an attempt to increase hormone production. Treatment may include an iodine-rich diet of fish and iodized salt.
