Maurice Fitzmaurice (1861-1924), Irish civil engineer. Fitzmaurice worked on the Forth Railway Bridge from 1882 to 1888. From 1892 to 1912, he worked for the London County Council (LCC). He also worked on the Old Aswan Dam in Egypt (from 1898) and was made a member of the Ottoman Order of Medjidie and a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). For the LCC, he worked on the Blackwall Tunnel, the Rotherhithe Tunnel, Vauxhall Bridge and the Woolwich foot tunnel. He was knighted in 1912 when he retired from the LCC. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
