Of somewhat wider purpose than these, seeking a moredistant goal, were Magellan and Drake. Magellan was thefirst explorer who succeeded in passing the new continent andso bringing his ships all around the world. He himself diedduring his astonishing voyage, but one of his little cockle-shell boats got all the way around Asia and Africa as well asAmerica, and so reached back to Spain.
