The story of the greatest nations; a comprehensive history, extending from the earliest times to the present, founded on the most modern authorities, and including chronological summaries and pronouncing vocabularies for each nation; and the world's famous events, told in a series of brief sketches forming a single continuous story of history and illumined by a complete series of notable illustrations from the great historic paintings of all lands. crossing the Isthmus of Panama, Cortezand Pizarro conquering the inland regions north and south, and then Sebastian Cabot, already famed for his explorationsof North America, explored the far southern regions of thepresent Argentine Republic. Of somewhat wider purpose than these, seeking a moredistant goal, were Magellan and Drake. Magellan was thefirst explorer who succeeded in passing the new continent andso bringing his ships all around the world. He himself diedduring his astonishing voyage, but one of his little cockle-shell boats got all the way around Asia and Africa as well asAmerica, and so reached back to Spain. Drake was the firstP^nglishraan to break in on the Spanish supremacy over SouthAmerica. He duplicated Magellans feat, or rather heachieved a yet harder task; for he went as an enemy, fightinghis way through all Spains waters and past all Spains na-vies, until he too circumnavigated the globe. > •:• ^ ^ ^ ^ ^. ^ .I* 4» \^ ^. .4, ^ «{»^ ^ \^. ^ 4> ^» .^ ^. ■^p:^. ;^ r I 4- I*-v
