The commemorative ceremony was held to recognize Memorial Day, with a special emphasis on World War I-era Col. Ramsey William Joseph Flynn, who was originally from Mt. Vernon. Flynn served with the 313th Infantry Regiment of the 79th Infantry Division, the predecessor to the 79th SSC. The event was held at St. Paul’s church, which was built during the Revolutionary era making it one of the oldest churches in New York. In 1943 the church was designated as a National Historical Site and became part of the National Park Service in 1980.
