England, Buckinghamshire, Ledburn, Mentmore Bridge (scene of the 'Great Train Robbery' on 8th August 1963)

The ‘Great Train Robbery’ occurred here on 8th August 1963. Early in the morning Bruce Reynolds and his gang members (including the notorious Ronnie Biggs and Buster Edwards) took Million from a Royal Mail train heading from Glasgow to London. Most of the cash taken was never recovered. During the robbery the train driver, Jack Mills, was severely injured in the head with an iron bar. The incident was a major news story in its day, as it was seen by many as an attack on the state (the Post Office and the Royal Mint both being state owned), which divided opinion on the publicity that the perpetrators received in the popular press.
