Lfloyd Howell, 00., winner of theMax Mayer prize for joint excellence inathletics and scholarship, began his ath-letic training- in the Iowa City HighSchool where he played on the footballand baseball teams and was star athletein the high jump, hurdles, and pole vault. During his freshman year at theUniversity, Howell won points in the polevault and hurdle races. As sophomore hewas high jumper and hurdler and playedhalf-back on the second eleven. At theoutbreak of the Spanish-American warhe joined Company F, 2nd U. S. Volun-teer Engineers at Chicago and went toCuba. During his career in the army herose in the ranks from private to sergeant-major. In June, 1899, he returned to hishome in Iowa City and re-entered the Uni-versity the following fall. On the 99football team, Howell was substitutetackle and end and played a fierce, hardgame. In the field meets, he won first inthe 120 and 220 yard hurdle races at theHome Meet, first in the 220 and second inthe 120 hurdles at the lowa-Grinnel
