Original and probably rare studio portrait postcard of Staffordshire pottery workers. These young men are thought to be pottery workers as Fenton was a pottery town, one of the six that made up the "Potteries" of the city of Stoke on Trent. Perhaps they are the famous "saggar makers bottom knockers" - an occupation that required unskilled young lads to knock the bottom of the saggar (Saggars were used to hold and protect pottery during kiln-firing), or the more skilled Frame Filler (an apprentice). Studio of L. Bowler, Foley Goldenhill Rd, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, circa 191

Stoke-on-Trent is a unique city in England. It made up of six distinct towns: Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton - collectively known as "THE POTTERIES". Source: (By far the largest number of UK pottery manufacturers were based in and around Stoke-on-Trent in a region known as the Potteries. Fenton is a purely industrial place. Within its boundaries there are numerous china and earthenware manufactories, the locomotive and waggon works of the Railway Company, the large engineering works of Messrs. Kerr, Stuart, and Co., a tram depot, the Great Fenton coalpits, furnaces, and chemical works, the Glebe colliery, and several other engineering works, while the Berryhill pits and forges are not far away. Note: The lad in the middle is limply holding a few strands of artificial flowers (the wire can be seen of the stem) - possibly his idea of a joke.
