Smith, son of James, Jr., and Betsey (Dyer) Smith, and brotherof George C. Smith, 48, was born in Meriden, N. IL, July 7, 1835, anddied in Rochester, N. H., February 9, 1906. He prepared for college in theMeriden and New London, N. IL, academies. He entered the University 660 NORWICH UNIVERSITY. [1861 in 1858, and remained nearly three years; was a member of the 6 X Frater-nity.
