Vintage photo circa 1917 of American explorer and physician Frederick Cook (1865 - 1940). Cook served as a surgeon on Robert Peary's 1891 - 1892 Arctic expedition and later with the Belgian Antarctic expedition of 1897 - 1899 but is mainly remembered for his claim that he was the first person to reach the North Pole in April 1908. The claim was initially accepted but was later discredited after being disputed by Peary, who himself claimed to have been the first person to reach the North Pole in April 1909, and Cook's reputation never recovered. Another claim by Cook, that he was the first person to reach the summit of Mount McKinley, Alaska, the highest mountain peak in North America, in September 1906 is also generally regarded as fraudulent. In later life Cook became involved in the oil business and was jailed in the 1920s after being convicted of fraud. Photo by Harris & Ewing.
