England, Hampshire, Hurst Castle, Fortification built on the end of Hurst Spit at the narrowest point of the Solent, opposite the Isle of Wight guarding the approaches to Southampton Port and Portsmouth harbour. First fort completed in 1544. Additional fortifications in the 1700s and 1800s. Current lighthouse 1867. Additional fortifications constructed during the First and Second World Wars. World Monuments Watch List 2022 due to coastal erosion undermining parts of the fort.
