USCGC Northwind Exploring the East Siberian Sea. Far from her Seattle homeport, the 269-ft. Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind is seen here moored to hummocked ice in the East Siberian Sea during her extensive 1963 oceanographic exploration. Marine tests were taken from the icebreaker at fifty-three stations in the Siberian Sea, and others in the likewise remote Chukchi and Laptev seas which adjoin the 's North Siberian coast. Information was gathered on currents, water water composition, marine plants and animal life, and bottom composition.
