Among- the many diseases broughtabout by the conditions of moderncivilization, there is one in particularwhich not only entails much bodilysuffering, but also great mental dis-tress to its victim, namely, lateralcurvature of the spine. This is apermanent bowing of the spine toone side, accompanied by a twistingof the body in a spiral manner uponits axis. It is seldom that there isbut one curve, the spine usuallybending above or below the firstcurve, so as to establish the equilib-rium. In this manner two andsometimes three curves are pro-duced. This affection is of great interestto the mothers of the land, becauseit occurs more frequently in youth,being usually noticed before thefourteenth year. In those unfor-tunate cases which are not recog-nized early, there is great danger ofthe deformity becoming are four times as many girlsas boys afflicted with this trouble,probably owing to their less activem
