Transgenic rice research. Mesh cover being used to isolate transgenic rice during an experiment. These plants have been infected with moth larvae to test their resistance to the larva, which normally eat the rice plants. Transgenic plants are ones that have been genetically modified by adding genes from different species. Cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) is a key food crop, forming the staple diet of around half the world's population. Photographed at the French agricultural research institute, CIRAD, in Montpellier, France.
